Four Exciting Aztec Atlatl Battles at Pennsic War 39!

The entire Thunderbird Atlatl staff is back in Candor busily working at the shop. Give us a call if you have any atlatl questions or just want to chat about atlatls!
Some members of our staff have just returned from Pennsic War 39, held each year just north of Pittsburgh, Pa., and the site of some pretty amazing Aztec Atlatl Battles!
If the Aztec Atlatl Battle has developed anywhere, it has developed at Pennsic. Members of the Society of Creative Anachronism have fine tuned the game developed by Bob Berg of Thunderbird Atlatl. This year, we were happy to have four battles scheduled in the Pennsic Battlefield. Each of them had their exciting and climatic moments and we know the participating warriors have many a good yarn to tell! Special thanks to Ivarr for scheduling the battles and we look forward to next year! For upcoming events, we will be at the Stonetool Show at Letchworth State Park for the World Atlatl Association meeting and we look forward to seeing our many atlatl and flintknapping friends!

This & That!

Missouri Approves Hunting Deer with Atlatls
Missouri deer hunters will be able to hunt with atlatls this year. According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, atlatls have been legal since 2007 to hunt small and and nongame fish. This year, deer have been added. Atlatls can be used throughout the season except for the muzzleloader portion of the hunting season. Congratulations to the Missouri Atlatl Association for seeing this through!

Back from Europe – Walk Through Time This Weekend
It’s been a busy summer so far at Thunderbird Atlatl with a trip to Germany and other parts of Europe. It was great meeting many new European friends. This weekend, we will be in our nearby community at the Walk Through Time and Lumberjack Festival event at the Hiawatha Boat Launch and on Hiawatha Island in Owego, NY. The event is sponsored by the Waterman Conservation Center. Here’s information on the event: Waterman Conservation Center events

Melting Ice Sheet Reveals 10,000 Year Old Atlatl Dart

Pictures and stories were all over this week of a 10,000 year-old atlatl dart which showed up after an ice sheet melted near Yellowstone National Park.

Craig Lee of the University of Colorado at Boulder discovered the dart. The three foot long dart was bent with a sharp kink in it when discovered. It had a projectile point on one end and a cup or dimple on the other end. It is a birch sapling. To read more about this find and to see a photo, check out this link: Atlatl Dart Discovered

If you are ready to check out some newer atlatl darts, Thunderbird Atlatl has wooden and cane darts available in sizes ranging from five foot to seven foot. Darts are sold individually or in bundles of seven darts. It’s best to order at least three darts as shipping is based on length rather than weight and it’s difficult to ship one dart.

You can order through our web page or give us a call at 800-836-4520 or try our cell phone at 607-743-4379.
